Active School Week 2017

We had a really busy Active Week in Aglish N.S. last week 15th-19th May 2017.

We started the week with GAA. Three All- Ireland medal winners, Shane and Stephen Bennett members of the Waterford senior hurling team and former pupil and Waterford Camogie star Aishling O'Brien came to the school to show the pupils some Hurling/Camogie and football skills.
On Tuesday, Sham Ronayne from Cappoquin F.C put the children through their paces doing soccer drills and games. Along with this he presented the girls team with their Runners Up medals from the Spar 5 aside soccer tournament held in Waterford recently.
Pupils had a busy day Wednesday with local man and Mountaineer Donal Bray talking to the pupils about mountaineering, the equipment he uses, the highest peeks all over the world and the enjoyment of climbing mountains.  Another local man Stephen Mernin brought along Kayaks/Canoes and spoke to the children about Kayaking and demonstrated how to use the different types of Kayaks. Along with this the children participated in some tennis lessons with Ms. Duffy and Ms. Veale which they thoroughly enjoyed.
On Thursday, Ann and Hannah a local lifeguard spoke to the children about safety in the water especially in the summer and about what the different colour flags mean at the beach. Each class also took part in Orienteering around the school grounds with each teacher. The children loved working in pairs and looking for clues around the school.
On Friday, Blathnaid Foley came and did a taster session of Yoga with each class. The children enjoyed this and something that a lot of them had never tried before.  We finished up the week with our Run a Mile and it can be seen that most children are now completing the mile in under ten minutes.
It was a busy but enjoyable week and one that all the children thoroughly enjoyed. :)
